The Department of Chemistry was established in 1958 for teaching The Department of Chemistry was established in 1958 for teaching the subject at undergraduate level. In 1969 permission was granted by government & University of Jabalpur (Now known as R D University, Jabalpur) to run Postgraduate course i.e. MSc Chemistry with specialization in three disciplines, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry. This is the biggest department of the college with sixteen sanctioned posts. Chemistry is a compulsory subject in seven course combinations, offered at undergraduate level. The faculty members are qualified, devoted & regularly participate in academic activities for their academic growth. Over the years the department has maintained its standards in the field of teaching, research, and other academic & administrative activities.
“Biochemistry” is the science concerned with Chemical Nature & is the science concerned with Chemical Nature & Chemical behaviour of the Living Matter. It has a wide scope in the field of Medical, Pharmaceutical, Nutritional, Environmental, and Clinical Diagnosis. Looking at the scope of the subject, Biochemistry was introduced at undergraduate level in 1994–95; with the initial financial assistance from UGC under the scheme of “vocationalization of courses at undergraduate level” Presently this course is run under the self-finance scheme.

2003 The curriculum of MSc was restructured in light of “UGC Model Curriculum” where efforts have been made to minimize the compartmentalization of Chemistry into conventional three branches. Following New features have been introduced

- Introduction of Bioorganic, Bioinorganic & Biophysical Chemistry
- Compulsory paper on group theory & spectroscopy
- Compulsory paper on photochemistry & solid state Chemistry

PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE The Department of Chemistry is spread over 1275-sq.m area at ground floor. Laboratories are very spacious and equipped with specified Chemicals & Instruments. Looking at the large number of students at undergraduate & Postgraduate level, the Department has procured sufficient large number of glassware, Instruments & Chemicals.

Common Laboratories: The department has five common laboratories & 2 P.G. Laboratories for carrying out “qualitative & quantitative” analysis by classical methods, “Organic & Inorganic synthesis”, chromatography & other various exercises. The working tables are fitted with Granite stone top, gas burner, and “reagent shelves” for common reagents. Solid reagents, concentrated acids, & special reagents are kept on side shelves.

Research & Other Academic Activities : Research is the integral part of the department.
