About

The Department of Zoology was established in 1958. Postgraduate teaching began in the college in 1971, specializing initially in cell biology. Later, the department expanded its offerings to include specialization in fisheries and wildlife in 2001. At present department offers Fishery as special paper. In 2002 Biotechnology was introduced at the undergraduate level under self finance scheme to align with modern trends in research. Under the New Education Policy 2020, Medical diagnostics was also introduced as a vocational subject at the undergraduate level. The department is renowned as a nurturing center for many zoologists who are active in the teaching profession throughout India. The faculty motivates students to engage in research, curricular, and extracurricular activities to enhance their intrinsic and extrinsic capabilities. The department comprises a dedicated team of 13 teachers, 10 of whom hold Ph.D degrees, with two currently pursuing their research after registration. Over the years, the department has had distinguished scientists and subject experts as staff members, and many alumni have held important positions in reputed institutions or government jobs in India and abroad. The department is recognized as a research center under the jurisdiction of Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur. The faculty actively participate in guiding research work in various fields such as Environmental biology, Toxicology, Limnology, Biodiversity,  Wildlife, Applied Zoology. A large number of Ph.D's are produced under the guidance of Dr. Ira Pathak, Dr. Shubha Ghosh, Dr. Shashibala Shrivastava, Dr. Krishna Pateriya, Dr. Reeta Solanki, Dr. H. Maini, Dr. Shampa Jain, and Dr. Sadhana Kesharwani.

Recently, the department achieved another milestone of academic dignity by Digitalization of the Zoology Museum in February 2024. This initiative helps students access the updated systematic position and characteristics of zoological specimens with a single click. Faculty and interested students collected specimens from various sources, representing all possible Phyla and classes, and properly identified and placed them. The rediscovery of the Xerces blue by our faculty members, Dr. Arjun Shukla and Dr. Shraddha Khapre, was a notable achievement, as this species was previously reported as extinct. The department boasts a rich PG library with a collection of Books and Journals. To date, our teachers and research students have contributed to enriching the laboratory resources by donating their books to the department after securing jobs or completing their research work or Project. Teachers are also actively involved in the publication of books, magazines, and research papers under renowned publications.
